AirPods Case Buying Guide by Generation

Not every AirPods case fits every AirPods. Buy the wrong one and it either won't close, blocks the charging port, or interferes with wireless charging. Here's how to get it right by generation.
Step 1: Identify Your AirPods Generation
Check the model number printed inside the charging case lid, or in Settings → Bluetooth → tap the (i) next to your AirPods.
- AirPods 1st/2nd Gen — smaller, rounder charging case
- AirPods 3rd Gen — slightly taller case with a shorter stem on the earbuds
- AirPods Pro (1st Gen) — compact case, no wireless charging pad indent unless MagSafe version
- AirPods Pro 2nd Gen — same case shape as Pro 1st Gen, but check for the speaker grille on the bottom edge (a 2nd Gen giveaway)
Cases are not interchangeable across generations — a 1-2 Gen case will not fit a 3rd Gen or Pro charging case, even though they look similar in photos.
Step 2: Match the Case Type to How You Use Them
Hard shell / shockproof — best if AirPods live loose in your bag or pocket without a dedicated pouch. Protects against drops onto hard floors, which is the single most common way charging cases get damaged.
Silicone sleeve — best for everyday carry. Adds grip so the case doesn't slide out of shallow pockets, and cushions minor drops. Most silicone cases still allow wireless charging through the material.
Novelty / character designs — purely aesthetic, but worth checking two things before buying: does it still allow the lid to close fully, and does it block the LED status light you use to check charging/pairing state.
Step 3: Confirm Wireless Charging Compatibility (If You Use It)
If you charge your AirPods case wirelessly, check the case material isn't too thick at the bottom — some novelty and hard-shell designs add enough bulk that the case won't sit flush on a charging pad. Silicone cases marketed as "MagSafe compatible" or "wireless charging compatible" are the safer bet if this matters to you.
